Vans Mountain Edition, also known as Made for the Elements (MTE) is Vans’ move away from the Californian skateboarding culture they’re known for, and their push towards providing for the colder weather and harsher conditions.
First hitting shelves in 2014, the debut sneaker to carry the MTE branding was the Sk8-Hi which boasted weatherproof aspects. Today, shoes that carry the MTE title contain elements such as water-resistant, Scotchgard™-treated leather and suede uppers, warm fleece linings, and heat retaining layers between the sockliners and outsoles. In summary, don’t let their skate appearance deceive you, these shoes are definitely warm.
The ice from the winter wasn’t forgotten by vans either, as they used their 20+ years of snow boot design innovation to create weatherized soles for their MTE models as well. Making an adjustment from their usual waffle pattern soles, the lugged outsoles ensure traction for wet, icy, and snowy terrains.
While the MTE collection’s main focus was the weatherization of their sneakers, they’ve also implemented several pieces of clothing to coincide with their snow sneakers through the years. Providing garments such as jackets and vests, all outfitted with high-tech, warm, performance materials, the entirety of the MTE collection was made to help you endure the cold.
