While it may come as a surprise to some to some, Nike’s upcoming 2022 collaboration with Hello Kitty isn’t that out of the blue. In fact, the two already worked together in the early 2000's on one of the rarest Nike collabs to date.
2004 marked the 30th anniversary of Sanrio’s iconic Hello Kitty character, which meant something special had to happen. To celebrate the occasion, one of Japan’s most recognizable characters would collaborate with sportswear giants, Nike. To make this highly coveted collab even bigger, Hiroshi Fujiwara, the godfather of streetwear, and Steven Smith (Nike, Adidas, Reebok & more), one of the world's most recognized sneaker designers, jumped on board as well.
The project would see 4 variations of the Nike Air Presto, a new shoe that had only just launched a few years prior, all transformed into Hello Kitty themed sneakers. With each of the two special designers creating their own, and the other two being taken care of, the plan for this special release was to only create 500 of each colorway.
As the hype would build for the 2,000 pair limited release, the talk would slowly fade away. The already low numbers of 2,000 would ultimately dwindle down, rumored to be only 12 pairs per colorway, each of which would end up only going to friends and family.
Unfortunately, that’s how the original story ends, but now, 18 years later, anybody who’s still feeling pain from not copping back then can fill that empty void in their heart.
This special reunion is headed to Montreal, with Off The Hook dropping the Nike x Hello Kitty collection on Thursday, May 26, 2022!
